Since that, not specifically for 5k, but I have been training a lot, and I'm still not in 20 minutes, my best result is 20:04. 15 years ago, when I started running for the first time I ran 3k tests, the first one was 17 minutes, then 3 months later the second one was 12:45, and then I needed more than a year to run a sub 12 minutes 3k.
Firstly, the biggest impact of getting under 20 min for 5k was shaving a minute off my 10k PB (to 40.40). Running at 4.05 per km now felt like a brisk jogging pace rather than a full out tempo run. Secondly, later in the year, I tried to use this same approach to get a sub-40 10k. However, it didn't work.
Clearly, you can't break 40 for 10k if you cant break 20 for 5k. You should actually be able to break 19 for the 5k I'd say, if you want to be able to break 40 for 10k, just a rough guess. I'd say so. I've got sub 20 5K but am about two minutes off sub 40 10k. That shit's actually way harder than sub 20 5k.
A 20 minute 5k is very fast. Just to put it in perspective, my roommate is a Marine and they do timed 3 mile runs and these guys are in amazing cardiovascular shape, and an 18 minute time is a perfect score and extremely hard to get. A 20 minute 5k equates to under a 6.5 minutes/mile pace held for just over 3 miles which is very fast.
TheDude--Abides- •. Agreed. the build up to trying a 5k PB is quite tense, knowing its going to be hard work and you'll have to suffer a bit. I think what sets apart some runners is the mental strength. People who sub 20mins generally are a bit more mentally tough and will push themselves further and faster.
To run a 17:00 5k would be 5:28/mi pace, and that workout was 4:50 pace. If that was super easy, then 17:00 should be simple. Just watch for burnout if you're running 2 super hard workouts on only 50mpw. BigJeffyStyle 4:28 mile/9:16 3k/15:55 5k/33:26 10k/1:17 Half • 8 yr. ago.
Anyone who has timed a 5-kilometer (5K) run should plan for a 10-kilometer (10K) run to take a little over twice as long. Average 10K times vary by age, sex, and fitness levels. Among people aged
I mean, you spent a couple of years running for 30 minutes a day as hard as you could for 5 days a week and couldn't break 20 minutes and now you don't run as much and you are breaking 19 minutes. You are well on your way to being a stud. It is true, speed does kill. Now let's get those 400 times down so we speed up our 5k time. Let's run them
